Schafer’s Reading: Prompt 1

When I think of hi-fi and lo-fi soundscape differences, I ironically think of a louder dominant sound for hi-fi, and a lower subtle sound for lo-fi.  Schafer goes on to describes these two sound categories as just that. He says, The hi-fi is one in which discrete sounds can be heard clearly because of the low ambient noise level… The quieter ambience of the hi-fi soundscape allows the listener to hear farther into the distance just as the country side exercises long-range-viewing. (Schafer 43)  Schafer compares these differences as a metaphor between the country and the city.  He goes on to describe lo-fi soundscape as … individual acoustic signals (that) are obscured in an overdense population of sounds. (Schafer 43) From personal past experiences, I strongly agree with Schafer.  When I go to the beach, an example of lo-fi would be my footsteps in the sand while an example of hi-fi would be perhaps children playing at the park next door. After reading Schafer’s definitions, I can ultimately relate to my beach experiences of hi-fi soundscape and lo-fi soundscape.

Schafer’s Reading: Prompt 2

From the many soundmarks Schafer describes, the one that seems to continuously be referenced in the sound of a horn.  He gives some background knowledge of the horn and he relates it to that of a hunt, a war, and religion however, the sound I will dig deeper in is the hunt horn.  He describes this horn as the only communication between the hunters and the beaters, a horn signal. As I reflect on my own childhood, one of the soundmarks that stand out the most to me is the sound of a huge cherry blossom tree in the field next to my house.  During a windy summer day, the tree would violently shake and drop the flowers on the grass.  The entire field would be covered in petals and anyone in the neighborhood could distinctively hear the great rustling and swooshing of that beautiful cherry blossom tree.  Whenever I hear the rustling of leaves or trees I think of my childhood and a smile is plastered on my face.

'When The Pain Melts Away'

This project tested and strengthened my ability of listening and editing in ways I never thought possible.  Listening to all the sounds and trying my hardest to listen beyond their initial appearance was not an easy task however, with reflection of my past and time and determination of editing, I have created a sound I can proudly say reflects a time in my life that was very difficult to overcome, the death of my Granny.  With this edit, I hope I take you on a journey through my past.  Feel my tears and pain, then blissfully gallop in my happiness, joy, and everlasting success.

Sound01- This sound reminds me of strong winds blowing. It gives me the emotions of sadness, pain, perhaps depression. 

Sound02b- This sound reminds me of someone walking either in grass or on the beach sand. Cool and calm wind is blowing and I feel the emotion of peace and serenity.

Sound03- This sound reminds me of a space ship or some sort of galactic sound. I feel the emotions of eerie and distance.

Sound03B- This sound reminds me of paper crumbling. I feel the emotions of decision making. I used this sound in my edit to symbolize change. The monent when I decided I had to continue living and accept that Granny was gone but never forgotten.

Sound03C- This sound was very peaceful. It has a pleasant bliss to it. I really enjoyed this sound thus, I decided to use it in my edit representing my transion to joy and happiness.

Sound03D- This sound reminds me of a construction site. Something drilling?

Sound04B- This sound reminds me of joy as well. I hear birds chirping and wind blowing in tranquility. 

Sound05B- This sound was calm as well. I felt sun, wind, and birds. The scene felt like a social gathering.

Sound05C- This sound was calm in the beginning however when the car zoomed by I felt like something was about to happen.

Sound06- This sound is muffled. It gave me the feeling that I physically there however, not mentally or emotionally.

Sound07- I feel like I am around alot of people but I'm in the background and we're going somewhere I'm either not familiar with or somewhere I really don't want to go.

Sound07B- It sounds like someone is knocking at the door however, I'm in the kitchen or somewhere else doing something house like which is preventing me from coming to the door. 

Sound09- This gives me the feeling that I'm somewhere eavesdropping on a conversation that I can't quite hear in the beginning. Then the sound changes to a sound check at a concert or rehearsal with a few friends listening.

Sound10- This sound made me feel like something was about to happen but then it never did.

Sound11- This sound was very airy and open. It could be interpreted many different ways. 

Sound12- This sound had some static that cleared up to be maybe rain and air mixed with faint drilling. 

Sound13- This sound was like I'm walking and my keys are shaking.  It's late at night and I'm on my way to an outing.

Sound15- Very relaxing and clear, almost like a moment of silence that then clears to waves at the beach and a faint car horn.

Sound16- I feel like I'm laying on a blanket at the beach and I'm clearing my mind. Releasing all negativity and receiving positivity.

Sound16B- Airy sound that can be used to convey many different emotions. 

Sound17- This takes place at a gas station however, it feels like a confrontation is about to happen.

Sound19- Two people just arrived home from a party or social gathering that they enjoyed.

Sound20- Doors closing and something being moved perhaps a table or some sort of furniture after maybe an argument took place.

Sound21- A party is coming to an end and someone is laughing from a good time they had

Sound22- I feel like its late at night and I'm sitting on my porch on a windy night and traffic is passing by then, I get in my car and join the traffic.

Sound23- A truck is unloading shipment at a store and the beep is beeping signaling them coming backing the truck up.

Sound24- Very hectic and rugged sound. Initially sounds like someone is looking for something inside then changes to  a scene perhaps outside.
